After signing the treaty of Locarno in 1925, Germany became a member of the League of Nations, an organisation whose aim it was to keep peace in the world and to act as arbiter in international disputes. The Nazis regarded the League as an agency of the Allied Powers, who forced upon Germany the hated Versailles settlements. In October 1933, Hitler decided that Germany would leave the League.
